Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority…”

“What is this? A new teaching with authority…”

     So St. Mark’s Gospel describes the ministry of Jesus. People realized there was power in the teaching of Jesus. He knew what He was talking about. And His actions matched His words. His miracles showed

He had the power to heal—to save—to redeem.

Next weekend, at the end of all Sunday Masses we will celebrate the traditional Blessing of Throats in honor of St. Blaise.

Thank you to the members of our parish Young At Heart Social Group for paying for the new curtains in our Masci Hall. Thanks, too to Sue and Doug Garrett who have hung the curtains.

Thank you Knights of Columbus Auxiliary for a donation to purchase needed silverware so that we would have complete sets for our hall.

FINANCE

This week we paid 7 bills totaling $34,754.11. This included $14,175.20 to replace the boiler in Msgr. Dougherty Hall. It failed a few days before Christmas and could not be repaired. We needed to have the heating system working before cold weather would cause pipes to burst. Also included was $20,005 to provide health care coverage for all lay employees; and $358.41 to provide the monthly offertory envelopes.

 The Offertory Collection for the weekend of 1/15 was $8,147; $6,289 was the offertory collection for the weekend of 1/22.

Thank you so much for your support!

If you or someone in your family are in the hospital and would like to be visited, please call the Rectory, 764-0325 Ext. 100.

EVER THOUGHT OF VOLUNTEERING

FOR A YEAR???

Are you interested in making a difference in our world? The SSJ Mission Corps is a year-long volunteer program in the city of Philadelphia sponsored by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Volunteers are invited to live in community with fellow volunteers and open themselves to God, as they work for justice and reach out to meet the needs of the poor and the marginalized. The tagline for the program is “One Year to Change a Life”, which encourages women to not only work for change in the lives of others but also their own life. The SSJ Mission Corps is for women, ages 21-35, looking to dedicate a year of their life to working for the mission of the Gospel and the Sisters of Saint Joseph in our world. During the year, volunteers focus on 4 core values: justice, simple living, spirituality and community. The program runs from August to June. For more info contact: Colleen O’Grady, Director, SSJ Mission Corps: 1-215-248-7235, or http://ssjphila.org/SSHMissionCorp2.html;

ST. HELENAS’ YOUNG AT HEART

     The Prayer Shawl Ministry continues to function with a few members knitting and crocheting. Even if you do not do needle work members are needed for the Prayer Group, Visiting and taking the shawls and afghans to those in need of comfort, love and prayer. Shawls can be made at home and then brought to a meeting for the blessing of the article. Many blessings are woven into every article made. Wool hats for soldiers are still needed and caps for new born babies and children. Meetings are the 4th Wednesday of each month at 7pm in the convent side entrance. Free yarn can be obtained at the convent. Come as a guest at any meeting and see what our members do. For more info call Florence, 798-4686 or Carmela, 762-9057. Information to request a prayer shawl for someone in need will be found on the round table in the church’s main entrance.

     It is the very times that we feel most stressed and pressed for time that we can short change our spouse. After all, he or she will understand. Today, take a moment when you next see your spouse to pause and offer a warm, knowing glance. No words need be spoken. Takes maybe 5 seconds. You can spare the time.
